How to keep your carpets cleaner, longer. — Lesson #1
March 18th, 2008This weeks tip involves spot removal. There is an easy and inexpensive way to remove spots and spills from your carpet without the risk of spreading the spot or, even worse, setting it forever in your carpet. Follow these simple instructions and you will be able to safely and effectively remove just about any spill or spot in your carpet.
It is important that I caution you NOT to use any bleaching agents on your carpets, such as bleach and peroxide. No amount of cleaning can restore the color to your carpet once it’s been removed.
Step one: In a one quart empty spray bottle, mix one cup tap water, one cup white vinegar, 4-5 drops of dish soap (not dishwasher soap, such as Cascade) and 1/4 teaspoon of table salt.
Step two: Spray your solution on your spot, using a light mist. Avoid saturating the area, using just enough solution to dampen the affected area.
Step three: With a dish rag or old towel, work the solution into your spot, starting on the outside area working inward toward the center. As your towel or rag is soiled, adjust so you are working with a clean part. Gently wipe until you reach the center. This helps you avoid spreading the spot.
Step four: Repeat steps two and three until your spot is gone.
If you follow these simple steps, you will not experience recurrent wicking (spots coming back in the same area), nor will you create a residue that will attract dirt to that area and cause it to resoil. Keep in mind that there are no miracle solutions to spot and stain removal. There is no one product that works on everything, all the time.
If you are unable to remove your spots easily, using these easy steps, call me and set an appointment for a professional carpet cleaner to assist you.
